Hot Flashes
Mar 28, 2000

Chatting with two HIV-positive friends recently (both CD4 around 350-500, VL quite low, neither taking ARVs), both mentioned occasionally experiencing 'hot flashes'. These apparently last perhaps a couple of minutes, with sudden sweating, and feeling flushed.

We have not seen this symptom referred to anywhere. Is it common? Does it mean anything?

Thanks

Response from Dr. Feinberg

You haven't given me many clues to go on -- if you and your friends are women in their late 30s-40s, these may be early symptoms of menopause. If you and your friends are men, then quite truthfully I have no idea what these "hot flashes" are. They are not common at all in my experience, and I'm not sure it signifies anything worth worrying about.
