PML - What is it?
Feb 7, 2000

across some literature that talked about PML - an AIDS related brain disease. What is it? What are the symptoms one should watch out for? How does one get tested for it? -

Response from Dr. Currier

PML is a brain infection caused by JC virus. The range of possible symptoms is large and depends on what part of the brain is involved. A CT or MRI scan will show lesions in the white matter of the brain. Fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord can be tested for JC virus by PCR technology, and a brain biopsy will show the characteristic changes of PML in the tissue.
