update on case
Mar 31, 2000

my films were presented at the conference, and the consensus was that I have an abscess. what ever caused it, whether it was PML or something else they don't know due to the fact they can't find anything in the biopsy. they feel though that my main problem is not the abscess, but the swelling. my neurologist and id Dr. are working together and will most likely begin me on a regiment or steroids to reduce the swelling. the hope if the swelling goes down my functioning should increase.

as far as the abscess, they feel my improving immune system should take care of that. my viral load is undetectable, t-cells are 200, and my cd8 helper cells are way in the normal range. I'll keep you updated again, wish me luck.

Response from Dr. Feinberg

I do indeed wish you the best of luck! When a brain abscess appears mysteriously, people often receive a long course of antibiotics, usually ampicillin and sometimes, metronidazole as well. Steroids do help the swelling which can cause a lot of symptoms by itself.
