Ganciclovir and Procrit/Neupogen
Jan 10, 2000

I was just diagnosed with CMV Retinitis, and am using Ganciclovir daily via catheter. My doctor is recommending the use of Procrit AND Neupogen 3 times a weeek, each. Is it safe to combine these 3 drugs?

Your advice is really appreciated! Thank you!

Response from Dr. Feinberg

Yes, it is. Themost common problem with ganciclovir islow white blood cells, and the Neupogen stimulates the production of these cells. Anemia (low red blood cells) is not usually due to ganciclovir. You could ask your doctor if you really need it.
