abdominal petechiae rash??
Jun 25, 2001

Can petechial looking rashes occur in any acute/non-life threatening conditions? My partners rash occurred in the lower abdominal area and I was wanting to know what other conditions apart from meningitis they occur in.

Response from Dr. Feinberg

Petechiae are caused by low platelet counts. Anything that can lower platelet counts significantly can cause petechiae, which is just bleeding from the smallest blood vessels called capillaries. Petechiae are not usually the result of an infection, but some infections do result in low platelets counts. Petechiae can occur anywhere on the body.
