Women Specific OIs
Jun 13, 2001

I am a US health volunteer in Africa. At a recent local seminar, I received info about women specific OIs that I believe might have been incorrect/arrived at by supposition, one of which was an increased tendency towards breast cancer. Could you provide me with a list of Women Specific OIs? Also, the same information regarding children would be appreciated. I would like to make sure I do not pass on any misinformation that might have occured. Thank you, AL

Response from Dr. Feinberg

The only women-specific OIs associated with HIV are cervical cancer (not breast cancer) and recurrent candida vaginitis. Both of these problems can occur in HIV- women, of course, but they occur much more frequently in HIV+ women.
