| CD4 Count and Candida Esophagus (Please Help!) Jun 1, 2001 Dear Dr. Feinberg, Would you expect to find candida esophagus in a person with a CD4 count of 1000, and no detectable viral load??? I've continually tested negative for HIV 1/2 over many years, but have developed this condition. What gives??? Thanks in advance. |

Response from Dr. Feinberg
Candida esophagitis would be most unusual in someone who is HIV- and has normal T cells. How certain are you that this diagnosis is correct? This problem could a;so occur in someone whose immune system is not performing normally for a reason other than HIV-- HIV is not the only cause of immune dysfunction. |
