Shingles
Mar 22, 2001

I'm 30 years old and a few months ago I had a bout of the shingles. I've never been tested for HIV. I thought that shingles happened primarily in people over 50. How often do people my age get shingles and should I be concerned?

Response from Dr. Feinberg

Shingles does occur in healthy, younger people, but it is more common in older people and those with impaired immune systems. I can't give you a statistic for 30 year-olds. If you're concerned that it may be associated with HIV, then get tested.
