early OI's Mar 13, 2001 Dear Doc, what's the earliest recorded w/ hiv infected person could get OI's (particularly oral candidiasis and PCP) after the day of infection w/o medication/treatment? 1 year? 5 years? Hope for your kind reply the soonest. Thank you. John |

Some people have such severe depletion of their T cells when they are first infected that they get an OI as part of a seroconversion syndrome, although this isn't common. In general it takes an average of 8-10 years after infection to develop a serious OI like PCP. Oral thrush can occur earlier, when T cells drop below 500. There are, of course, always exceptions to any rule. |
