| CBC clarification Mar 18, 2002 Hi, Just wondering about the diagnostic value of the CBC.. if it has such little value, why is such a integral part of lab tests in montitoring the health/ progression in patients with HIV? Surely after a extended time say, 10 years the CBC would show effects of HIV progression. |

Response from Dr. Feinberg
The CBC is an immensely useful test in general. It just cannot be used to diagnose HIV infection, which is what many people write in to ask about. Certainly the CBC will reflect advanced HIV disease in certain ways, BUT NONE OF THESE CHANGES IS DIAGNOSTIC FOR HIV DISEASE. I hope that helps. |
