warts and my wits end
Dec 3, 2001

help! i'm at my wits end. i've had recalcitrant genital warts for about two years now. the doctors have tried everything: liquid nitrogen, podofilox, electrocautery, imiquimod, laser surgery and they keep coming back. the specialist keeps blaming the HIV and throws his hands in the air, but i tell him my counts are fine (cd4 960, vl<50). what more can i do? will i have these ugly warts forever? thanks!

Response from Dr. Feinberg

Sometimes warts are very recalcitrant. Since you've tried all the standard treatments, you might consider just being as patient as possible and see if the warts will regress as you are on HIV meds longer, as you didn't say how long you've been treated for your HIV. One last possibility is to try interferon injections, either systemically and injected specifically into the warts. There are reports that this has been helpful to some people, at least over the short term (usually 3 months). Good luck!
