UNDERWEAR as a barrier
Mar 25, 2002
Dr. Feinberg,
I am wondering if the 2 layers of clothing that I used as a barrier for intercourse can be still risky for contracting HIV or other STDs? thank you !

Response from Dr. Feinberg

The recent experience of anthrax transmissionthrough the microscopic holes in the paper of the envelope should tell you the answer here. You can hold clothing (including underwear) up to the light and actually see the holes in the weave of the fabric. If you can see the spaces, then germs that can only be seen with a microscope (or in the cases of viruses, with an electron microscope0 can certainly get through these spaces. That is why "natural" condons, which are made out of animal tissues, are not recommended for disease prevention.
So the answer is, clothing won't protect you from HIV or other STDs.
