Lung Infections/ Abcess'
Mar 1, 1999
I was recently diagnosed (12/98) with PCP Pnemonia, plus told of the HIV+ status. I was hospitalized, treated and released on 12/6 with "clear lungs". However, a new chest x-ray taken 2/2/99 reveals 'bullous' changes and two air fluid levels present within cavaties or 'bullae' within the right upper field. Also, there is a 1.5 cm. "nodule density" involving the left mid to lower lung. It is unclear whether this is a nipple shadow or a possible 'pulmonary nodule'. What is: Bullous, Bullae, Nodule Density, and Pulmonary nodule? Thank you.

Response from Dr. Currier

A bullous lesion or bullae are a small cavity usually formed when several air sacs merge into one bigger one, a nodule is a solid lesion or spot- nodule, density and pulmonary (lung) nodule are all similar ways of saying a sot on our lung. The changes you describe are tings that need to be checked out- some may be changes that developed after your PCP- but one cannot assume this. I hope you get some answers.
