Ask the Experts about Opportunistic Infections

healthy two-year old with localized neck mac infectionm
Apr 25, 2001

My otherwise healthy 2-year old has a localized MAC infection on the neck.(size of a 50 cent piece) It started as a swollen lymph gland which turned into a large abcess. After surgery, the MAC diagnosis was determined. After 49 days of antibiotic treatment (3.5 ml of biaxin 2 times/day + 2 100 mg.tablets of myambutol once a day), there has been no improvement or change. We & his Dr. are very discouraged. Child is 100 healthy otherwise. Alternative treatments and any ideas as to why he contracted this infection would be appreciated. All Dr.s are claiming bad luck? I am worried about other immune disorders, etc. signed - Need some good News

Response from Dr. Feinberg

In otherwise healthy children surgery is often required to remove the infected node and get rid of the MAC infection. I recommend that you consult a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases for specific help with your child. Good luck!
