NON HIV MAC
Mar 22, 2002

NON HIV MAC My Mom has MAc from our local water source. How can I find info that is not HIV related? She is 70 and very sick from this disease, Pls help me obtain more info. Thanks

Response from Dr. Feinberg

I don't know of any resources written for the lay public about nin-HIV-associated MAC, but you can certainly start by looking this up in a standard textbook of infectious diseases, like The Principles & Practice of Infectious Diseases edited by Mandell, Dolin & Bennett. There you will find additional references that you can follow up. Most HIV- people with MAC have chronic lung disease to begin with. If the MAC is causing serious infection, it can be treated with the same antibiotics we use in HIV+s: azithromycin or clarithromycin + ethambutol + (sometimes) rifabutin. It has to be treate dof a long time-- usually many months-- to get a good response. Also-- get your mom to stop smoking. Good luck!
