Newly Infected with Cough Symptoms
Apr 24, 2001
Hello,
I have only been infected with HIV for less than 6 months. Since finding out 3 months ago, I have taken extremely good care of my body. I am quite a proponent of natural and alternative therapy as well as drug treatment (when necessisary), so I treat my body with care. I have increased my protein intake to 100+ grams per day, Im eating right, working out, taking vitamins and supplements, have cut back on sugar, alcohol, and caffeine. The person I was infected from is doing very well. In fact his doctor says it seems to be a weak strand. Heres my question, for the past 2 months or so, I have been struggling with a cough and draining. My GP thought it could be allergies but Claritin didnt help completely. Then he put me on Zithromax which seemed to help a little. I dont have fever or much headache symptoms, and I dont feel sick at all. Its just a bit of brown/green/peach mucus in the morning when I wake up, and very occasionally during the day. I have also noticed that my glands are swolen. I am going to see a specialist for the first time this week. I would assume that since im recently infected and taking great care of myself, that my t-cell count will be high and viral count low. I dont know what this infection/allergies/whatever could be. Any thoughts to help put my mind to rest? Thanks. :)

Response from Dr. Feinberg

You may have allergic rhinitis or even a bout of bronchitis. Altjhough it doesn't sound like a serious illness, it's a good idea to see a specialist because not everyone who has been infected recently has healthy T cell counts or a low viral load.
