The only role for lymph gland (node) biopsy in HIV+s is to diagnose some additional problem besides the HIV itself. When you are HIV+, your lymph glands will enlarge and then get smaller again -- it's all part of the disease. But if your doctor thought you had another infection in your lymph glands, like MAC, or another disease process, like lymphoma, it would be appropriate to get a biopsy. Many people with HIV initially get biopsied before they get an HIV blood test because their doctor is worried about what the enlarged node(s) mean but hasn't considered HIV as a cause. Once the biopsy comes back negative (usually it's read as "reactive", meaning the node looks like it's reacting to something but nothing specific is seen), then the doctor may think of doing a blood test for HIV.
