Ask the Experts about Opportunistic Infections

lymph node swelling
Dec 24, 2001

Normally, in hiv infection every one talks about lymph node swelling. My question is that which part of body one should look for swelling. Is it true that lymph nodes are all over body. If yes then how can one be on the look out of swelling.?

Response from Dr. Feinberg

Lymph nodes are indeed all over the body, and most are deep and cannot be felt. A physician knows where to look, but sometimes the swelling is very obvious, even to non-professionals. Here's the problem: lymph nodes swell for all kinds of reasons, not just as a result of HIV infection, so monitoring your lymph nodes isn't a particularly useful way to see if you have HIV or not. And, since lymph node swelling comes and goes throughout the course of HIV disease, checking on them isn't a useful way to monitor how your HIV is doing either.

If you are concerned about having HIV, the only way to know for sure is to have an HIV test; and if you already have HIV, the only way to know how you are doing is to check your t cells and HIV viral load.
