monospot negative?
May 21, 2001
A few months ago I came down with a "mono like illness", with rash, fever, swollen glands, and exudative tonsilitis. I visited my doctor and she said I had a swollen spleen as well. This occurred 7 weeks after I had sex with someone whose HIV status is unknown. My monospot test came back negative, my HIV test was negative also. I understand that for accurate results I should get tested again at 6 months, but my question is, is it strongly suggestive of HIV infection if I had monolike symptoms but a negative monospot test?

Response from Dr. Feinberg

A mono-like illness with a negative monospot test is suggestive of HIV, but by no means diagnostic, as more than one kind of germ can cause a mono-like illness. A repeat test at 3 months will give you near certainty about whether you are HIV+ or not; the 6 month test is just icing on the cake. Good luck!
