Couple with recurring thrush
Jul 5, 2001

Hi. We are a couple with a "low risk" life-style. We have suffered from recurring vaginal and penile thrush on and off for the past two and a half years. We have had no other obvious symptoms, and no oral thrush. Despite all efforts it keeps recurring, and is particularly exacerbated by intercourse. The reason we are writing is our worry that perhaps this is a sign of hiv infection. Neither of us has diabetes. The girl has endemetriosis, could this be related? Would you advise we get tested? Obviously with the stress this could cause we only want to do this if the thrush problem does suggest hiv infection. Thank you very much for your time.

Response from Dr. Feinberg

There are individuals that get recurrent thrush who do not have HIV. You may want to see an infectious diseases doctor or a gynecologist who specializes in recurrent candida infections to figure out why this is happening. While HIV is a possible explanation, it is by no means the only one. Good luck!
