Rhabdo Myosarcoma
Dec 28, 1999

Hello Dr. Currier,

I am hoping that you can share some information or least point us in the right direction. I have a 26 year old niece who is HIV positive and has currently been diagnosed with Rhabdo Myosarcoma. She resides in Georgia but we live in Florida. We are hoping that there is good resources available in Florida for help. What recommendations do you have about treatment and facilities that can provide her with the best care possible?

Response from Dr. Feinberg

Rhabdomyosarcoma is an unusual form of cancer and may not be related to her HIV status, but just may be an unfortunate coincidence. She needs to find a medical center with expertise in both soft tissue sarcomas ("rhabdomyo" means muscle) and HIV. You don't sat where in GA she is or where in FL you are. Such expertise would be available at Emory in Atlanta or Univ of Miami, for example. If that's not close enough, start with those places and get their recommendations for places that might be closer. Also, the CDC keeps a list of places where patients with HIV can be seen, which can probably be accessed through their web site: www.cdc.gov
