HCV Vaccine etc.
Nov 23, 2001

Dear Dr. Dieterich, I read some articles posted by the Chinese hepatitis foundation. They report that if the patient has positive HBsAg one year or longer after definite exposure to the virus, then s/he is chronic if not newly infected. Do you agree with them? Do you think the following suggestion a good way to get HCV immunity? You said in your previous reply that if a person is newly infected, then the cure rate is 100. OK, now suppose that we inject a small amount of virus to a person who has not been exposed to HCV. Then we treat the patient one or two months later if his/her PCR shows that the person hasn't cleared the virus. Doesn't this make people free from the disease?

Response from Dr. Dieterich

Yes that is the standard definition of chronic hepatitis B. Some people even use 6 months of HBSAg positivity. DTD
