Hi, im writing cause my uncle has Hiv and was just diagnosed with Hepatitis C. My question is: what is the prognosis to this, and what does this mean-him having both.
Response from Dr. Rodriguez-Torres
Hepatitis C is more agressive in patients coinfected with HIV.The progression to cirrhosis is more rapid, and a greater percentage of cases, may develop end stage liver disease. Although the mortality in HIV has decreased in the era of HAART,now the mortality is mostly related to liver related diseases. The HIV patients have an aditional problem of HAART drugs toxicity, but HCV is the most important factor. Your uncle should have his liver status evaluated, and considered for treatment. He will need a liver biopsy to asses this.We are more agressive now in coinfection, and these patients tolerate treatment well.We have had extensive experience treating coinfected patients with Pegasys and RBV and patients do very well.
