what are the average life span of people with HCV??
| Response from Dr. Dieterich
That is a very difficult question to answer, since there is no data. Many people will never have an issue with HCV and die of something else. Some people will have liver failure rapidly. HCV is the leading cause of liver transplant in the US today. It is hard to sort these out. If you have cirrhosis with fluid in the abdomen or swelling in the feet, the five year survival is about 50%. Cirrhosis without that decompensation results in a 85% chance of living 10 years, but that is only for cirrhosis. We really have no data on non cirrhotic patients. That is why we do liver biopsies on people with HCV to see how close they are to cirrhosis. DTD
