Latency period for the detection of HBV and HCV antibodies Aug 4, 2000 Dear Dr. Dietrich, in the case of HIV it is proposed to check for HIV antibodies 6 months after a possible exposure to be more than 99% sure. What about Hepatitis B and C? How long does it take until antibodies of that viruses can be detected? Does it already make sense to test for Hep B and C 3 months after possible exposure? Thanks! |

 Hepatitis B antibodies generally appear faster than hepatitis C antibodies usually in 6-8 weeks rather than 12-24 weeks. If you are in a hurry, it is easy to draw HCV RNA and HBV DNA by PCR, they will be positive in about 10 days after infection. DTD | ||||||||
