Treatment for hep c with less than 300 cd4?
Aug 29, 2001

Would you consider treatment as a viable option for people with less than 300 cd4? Is treatment any use when cirrosis is diagnosed? Thank you

Response from Dr. Dieterich

Both very good questions and pet peeves of mine. While I would like to see as many CD4 cells as possible when we are treating hepatitis C, it is not mandatory. The overall response rate may be a little lower if CD4 cells are lower, but without treatment, there is no response rate. Even when there is not a complete resonse or cure, the liver biopsy will be improved and the overall prognosis of liver disease will be improved. There is no reason to not treat because of CD4 cells. The situation is analagous to cirrhosis. The response rate is only slightly lower than in those people who do not have cirrhosis. Hepatitis C is still curable in people with cirrhosis! Everybody deserves a shot at a cure. DTD
