E Antibody Aug 3, 2001 Dear Dr. Thanks for all the great help you are providing..this forum has helped a lot of people get through the mystery of these issues. My question: What is the significance of the change from e antigen to e antibody. Is one still infectious? There seems to be a difference of opinion in the medical world. Thanks |

 The seroconversion from hepatitis B e antigen to e antibody is generally considered an endpoint in clinical trials and usually means that the virus is no longer contagious. There is a rare condition called the pre core mutant where a mutation in the hepatitis B virus will still produce HBV DNA. That is not common in the US, but is fairly common in Asia.
