DTD - great work! Diagnosed with Hep C this year. HCV RNA Quant = 2,129,500. HCV Subtypr = 1b. Age 48. My gastroenterologist indicated no need to perform liver biopsy. Says 99 of time, derives same information he gets from specialty blood testing. What is your suggestion regarding this issue.
Secondly, he indicates that this subtype does not respond to current treatment. Indicates to stay away from all alcohol and wait for cure to be found. Is there something I can do in the interim by taking Milk Thistle or other liver supporting herbs/vitamins?
Response from Dr. Dieterich
The sustained response rate (cure rate) for all genotypes entering the pegylated interferon studies (with ribavirin) ranges from 52-54%. For Genotype 1 patients it is still around 40%. That is a pretty good chance, if you ask me. There are other drugs coming but not for 5-6 years. If you are going to wait, I would recommend a biopsy. If not, then you should see someone who knows how to treat this disease. Good luck! DTD
