doctor: i have some questions about a recent physical. i have had hep c for about 10 years. my ALT was 34 (0 - 43) and AST was 25 (0 -33). it is in the normal range, however, should i be concerned that the 34 and 25 are close to the maximum normal range. please let me know what these results mean in layman terms. i would appreciate any help. should i be concerned?

Your case is what we refer as ALT normal Hepatitis C.We have been holding treatment from patients with normal hepatic tests,because the impression that the disease is ussually benign .At this time, there are clinical trials going on, where we are following these patients, with and without treatment. Trials with pegylated interferons,and ribavirin seek to determine the effect of treatment or long term observation, in the course of the disease. You should have all the information needed to decide if treatment is indicated in your case.This may require a liver biopsy,to really evaluate whats going on in your liver.
