|Hep C contagion
May 26, 2000
My boyfriend has Hepatitis C that he got in Canada when he had open heart surgery as a child. I was just wondering if I can get infected by sharing cups, having sex, sharing a house etc. What sort of precautions should I take??? Thanks!

Hepatitis C is not very contagious except through blood. So don't share razors or toothbrushes. There is a little evidence that it is slightly contagious disease sexually, but not very much. If he is new boyfriend, use safe sex. If he is a long time partner and you have not been using condoms, and you are HCV negative, then you do not have to start now. I would recommend against anal sex and sex during menstruation. Otherwise it is not really a household issue. DTD
