| HCV + HIV and Decompensation Jun 15, 2000 Dear Doctor, My friend had HCV/HIV and is now decompensated. It has not gotten too bad, it has been manageable. Nevertheless, we are looking around at the options. There are not many for people with HIV/HCV as you well know. What should he do? Try to find a liver or try treatment. Ribavirin is contraindicated in decompensated liver disease, but I don't see a whole lot of options?? Thanks in advance! Jeff |

Response from Dr. Dieterich
Dear Jeff, There are some transplant centers around the country that are considering transplanting HIV+ patients. A living related donor that is willing to donate part of their liver may be helpful in that regard. Some people are trying long term low dose interferon for cirrhotics without HIV and that may be worth a try. Your friend's MD should have an open mind, all contraindications are relative! Good Luck!
