|what is the risk of AIDS/Hep B & Chemo
Jun 20, 2014
I have a friend who has been living with HIV for more trhn 20yrs and now they full blown AIDS and recently found out they have Hep B whih is affecting their liver, now the doctors want them to start chemo once a week. plus! this person hae other health problem as well. wha are the risk of adding chemo teatment on top of that.
Response from Dr. Taylor
I do not know what the indication for the chemo is or what type of chemo, but there is always a benefit/risk ratio. So if there is cancer, in general the benefits outweigh the risks. In general with an HIV physician involved, chemo may be administered safely. People should be on antiviral medications for hepatitis B ideally with suppressed levels of HBV DNA, before starting chemo, and should have their liver monitored carefully during chemo.
