HCV Transmission
Jun 7, 2014

during traveling my Bnti Naseeby visited my family six days ago, she has been forgotten here toothbrush similar to my toothbrushes and when I came back home I used the wrong one accidentally, and I am upset now because I do not know that she was infected with hepatitis C. So what do you advise me to do (Testing for HCV and when) or what! Please Answer

Response from Dr. Taylor

Theoretically hep C may be spread if we share a toothbrush that contains blood infected with hep C. There are microscopic (invisible to the naked eye, only visible with high-powered microscope) amounts of blood that can be deposited on toothbrushes as gums bleed. So yes talk with your doctor about getting tested for hep C, although the risk of catching hep C this way is low (but not zero).
