Micro preemie infected from transfusion.
Apr 28, 2014

I am worried about my baby 18 months old now. I was hep b neg while pregnant. Daughter was born at 24 weeks. Transfused multiple times during 106 day NICU stay. Now I am hep b positive. Viral load results not back. Daughter has been plagued with vomiting slow growth and fever after fever over winter. Has had pale stool sometimes cottage cheese like as well as speckled with whiteish chalky stool. Ped says she was vaccine full course and isn't worried about contaminated transfusion blood. I am in a monogamous relationship with no drug or tattoos for either since last 2012 neg reports. Worried sick about daughter. Husband hep b test 4/14/14 was neg.

Response from Dr. Taylor

Your hep B DNA blood test should be ordered and results reviewed with you. If your hep B surface antigen is positive/reactive, your infant was at risk of acquiring hep B, and you should also see a hep B specialist for your own care.

Ask your daughter's pediatricians if she received HBIG at birth in addition to the hep B vaccine series to decrease risk of transmission. Ask them about recent results of HER hepatitis B blood tests including sAg, SAb, and DNA. At her age now the results should be conclusive and can give you the answers you need about whether or not she has hep B.

I would also discuss with your doctors and her doctors about checking for other infections that rarely may be spread via contaminated blood transfusions. Also discuss with your doctors the issues of breastfeeding. All best to you and your daughter.
