coming off methadone with Hep c
Jan 17, 2014

My daughter is on methadone and has Hep c. Can she come off the methadone without flaring up the hepatitis c? She told me the a Dr. told her if she didn't come off the methadone correctly she could die, is this correct?

Response from Dr. Taylor

Your daughter can come off the methadone without flaring up the hepatitis C. Coming off methadone should just be done very slowly over time, to avoid people going into withdrawal, feeling ill, and relapsing to opiates. There is no issue with harm to the liver at all.

Methadone is a very safe and effective medication. People can staay on this medication for life and it is very beneficial regarding HIV, hepatitic C and addiction-related outcomes.

For people who choose to come off methadone, it is important to have a relapse prevention plan in place. As we come off methadone we can feel the need to use opiates and this can be harmful and dangerous. If craving and withdrawal arise during tapering off methadone, stop the taper or slow it down.
