I was just told I have Hepatitis C with Genotype 1A and will need treatment and to see liver specialist for treatment. what kind of treatment will this be
| Response from Dr. Taylor
Current treatment for hepatitis C genotype 1 infection includes interferon injections plus ribavirin pills. In some parts of the world a third type of pill, hepatitis C protease inhibitors (such as telaprevir and boceprevir), are available. Adding this third medication increases the chance of cure.
Many new pills are under study and some should be here soon. These pills, called Direct Acting Antivirals (DAAs), are expected to increase the likelihood of cure and permit a fewer number of weeks of medication to achieve cure. Hepatitis C protease inhibitors are an example of one class of DAAs; there are others. Check with your doctors about the availability of these newer pills over time.
