Effects of hepatitis b if not treated
| Response from Dr. Taylor
Hepatitis B can cause scarring of the liver, called cirrhosis. Once we have cirrhosis of the liver, other parts of our bodies, including our kidneys, can give out. Our bodies can get sick in a number of ways as the cirrhosis progresses.
Hepatitis B can cause cancer of the liver, called hepatocellular carcinoma.
About 25% of people can die from this infection, so most, 75%, will not, but will die from something else.
Untreated hepatitis B can more readily be spread to other people.
For anyone with hepatitis B, not using alcohol, or consuming as little as possible, is very important for liver health. Smoking increases risk for liver cancer and other cancers, so not smoking or at least cutting down as much as possible -- very beneficial.
