|Hepatitis C Sexually Transmitted Question
Aug 28, 2012
My girlfriend recently called me telling me she has Hepatitis C. Google's information basically say its not a STD, but should I be worried. She got caught up in some drugs, but I never did any of them. Is it possible I could get hep c transmitted to me sexually? What are the odds?
Response from Dr. McGovern
Hepatitis C is mainly transmitted through shared injection drug use.
HCV outbreaks have been reported among men who have sex with men usually in association with traumatic sex or other STDs.
HCV can be uncommonly transmitted through sex among heterosexual couples (about 1%) but can be prevented with condom use. However, since the risk is so low, this decision to use condoms is made by the couple depending on their own views of risk. Some persons can't accept any risk...those persons would want to use a condom.
