Hep C Oraquick Finger Prick Test Accuracy
Jun 27, 2012

Hi Doc,

I previously posted about a prolonged kissing episode with a canker sore. At 85 days (approx 12 weeks) post exposure, I went and took a Oraquick HCV rapid test. As far as I know, it tests for antibodies. The result was negative. However, I am still feeling some tingling/prickling sensations/burns around my abdominal region.

My questions are: Are the prickly sensations/abdominal itch/burn something that happens in a lot of acute HCV infections? With the negative test, should I consider myself home free? Or should I continue to pursue testing at 6 months? Also, for the sake of other people, do you think this rapid test is as accurate as a lab test? (Should I go get a lab test?

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Response from Dr. McGovern

I doubt this was a risky exposure. The rapid test is GREAT..Have confidence in the results. Your symptoms dont' suggest new HCV infection to me.
