| Trying to convince my wife to stay, May 19, 2012 Dr McGovern, I recently tested positive for HIV and am in a 25 year marriage that I want to save. I went outside of my marriage and got this infection. My wife has no sex drive and would probably be ok with not having sex anymore. I am also willing to give it up just to stay with her. We are both 50 years old. How safe is she with just living with me? I need to convince her that she will not get infected by me. Please help me. |

Response from Dr. McGovern
You should post your question to the HIV forum. To save some time, I will tell you that a large study based in Africa showed that HIV treatment can reduce the risk of HIV transmission by about 97%. Treatment combined with condoms would work extremely well. This is referred to as "Treatment as Prevention" and it is an important advance in the field of HIV. You and your wife can be counseled about risks within a patient visit to your doctor. This way both of you can ask the questions you need to pose. | |||||||||
