hi there, How often after infection does the hep c virus fight itself off and is there anything a person can do to help fight it off ? Is it true that some people are immune to it in the first place and if so, is there a way to find out? Thanks so much!
Response from Dr. McGovern
When a person gets infected with hepatitis C for the first time, about 40% of patients will clear the virus. However, many patients get infection over again (from injection drug use) and then the virus eventually becomes persistent. It is estimated that about 80% of persons HCV antibody have virus in their blood. Some people clear the virus on their own due to strong immune responses. Some of this may be related to their genetic background (interleukin 28B for example).
