 The injection is pegylated interferon, which is given once weekly by injection. The duration of treatment depends on the type of HCV you have. For genotype 1, for example, PEG is given for 48 weeks. For genotype 2 or 3, PEG is given for about 24 weeks. Ribavirin is given twice a day orally with the PEG injections once weekly. However, there is great news for persons with genotype 1 infection. Protease inhibitors (boceprevir and telaprevir) are now available which are combined with PEG and RBV. So now genotype 1 patients can be treated with triple therapy (PEG+RBV+ a protease inhibitor) for only about 24 weeks with much better overall treatment responses. It is a great time for HCV treatment....and the development of new drugs keeps coming! | ||||||||
