what pain medication having hepatitis c
Jul 22, 2011

I have chronic back pain from bulging disc and pressing on a nerve.what pain medicine can I safely take now that I have hepatitis C. Was on lorcet 10 mg tid PRN. But can't take because of the Tylenol .Please advise.

Response from Dr. McGovern

Patients with viral hepatitis can take Tylenol...Just not in big quantities.

It is reasonable to take up to about 1300 mg a day (eg about 650 twice a day or 325 mg four times a day) for a short period of time to get relief.

I would not take Tylenol every single day for weeks on end...

I would also not recommend combining alcohol and Tylenol.

I would also be careful about using any other over the counter drugs. You want to be certain that they don't contain some Tylenol within them. (The active ingredient would be acetominophen). Many OTC drugs have acetominophen in them so you must be careful about that.
