Hep C From Human Bite
Jul 16, 2011

Over the weekend, I was caring for a Hep C + person and she had a panic attack and had to be restrained. She bit my hand and her 2 incisors broke the skin but drew no blood. Also, she used my toothbrush which I then used the next day (like an idiot) but it had been rinsed and she doesn't have gum disease. Do I have an exposure risk? If there was blood in her saliva during the bite would it have to go into my bloodstream or would the broken skin be enough to get infected? THanks

Response from Dr. McGovern

As a health care provider you should Definitely get tested for your own protection since you had this potential exposure on the job.

I think the risk is very low and all will turn out well...However, you want to get tested now at baseline to prove that you are negative.

Can you get hepatitis from toilet water splash back?
