| Safe Cleansing of Earrings Apr 3, 2011 Hi, I recently purchased a secondhand pair of pierced earrings. I have not worn them yet and, to be on the safe side, I have boiled them in water and cleaned them with antiseptic. Is this sufficient to ensure minimum risk of HIV or Hep C and does such a risk exist when wearing secondhand earrings. Many Thanks J |

Response from Dr. McGovern
I would not consider this a risk. Earrings pass through well-healed (epithelialized) holes in the skin that do not pose a risk. | |||||||||
