Likelihood of HCV infection via straight edge @ barbershop
Mar 20, 2011

At the end of my haircut the barber used a straight edge razor to clean up the back of my neck. I did not sustain any cuts or nicks but my neck was red afterward from irritation (no blood, just redness). After the cut I became anxious about the sterility of the blade so I called the barbershop and asked about their sterilization process. The guy said they use an alcohol spray on the straight edge. After searching the net it appears this is an inadequate sterilization procedure. Do I run any risk of contracting HCV? I was the first customer of the day, but have heard HCV is resilient and can survive many days.

Response from Dr. McGovern

Without any cuts, I do not consider you at risk.
