What percentage of people with Hep C will eventually need a liver transplant? And is it true that stress can have a negative impact on your liver and quicken the Hep C virus eventually leading to cirohsis? Finally does genetics play a role in the survival rate of people with hep c?
Response from Dr. McGovern
HCV is the leading cause for liver transplant.
Successful treatment of HCV which eradicates the virus leads to cure. The main issue is that more people will be cured of HCV in the years to come with all the new drugs that are being developed. It is a time of great hope.
Genetics do play a role in who may respond to interferon/ribavirin and who might clear HCV on their own when they are first infected. The new drugs will undoubtedly contribute to higher rates of cure in most patients.
