QUICK HEP B QUESTION
Jan 4, 2011

Hi doc McGovern, a quick Hep B question

My test results are: Hep B HsAg- negative Hep B core antibody- negative Hep B- anti-HBs- 1.6 mIU/ml

from what i understand, this means I got vaccinated and didnt respond to the vaccine or maybe a false positive.

The reason for the question is that I am a 21 year old gay male who doesnt remember being vaccinated(maybe when I was younger).

From what I understand If I built a natural immunity I should have both the anti-HBs and the core antibody.

So which is it: A- built natural immunity or B= failed to respond to vaccine or C= false positive or D= different opinion( if so please explain)

Thanks DOC and HAPPY NEW YEAR

Response from Dr. McGovern

Happy New Year to you as well!

I suspect you may have been vaccinated in the past but may have waning surface (protective) antibodies.

If you start your immunization series, I would get a surface antibody test two weeks after your first shot. If your antibody levels zoom up, then you probably just needed a booster. If your antibody levels are low, I would just complete the whole series.
