I'm Terrified!!
Nov 20, 2010

After routine blood tests found my WBC to be low, they tested me for HIV and it was positive. I have been married for 23 years and my husband and I have been 100% faithful. The only other man I have been with was 26 years ago. Is it possible to carry this virus undetected for 26 years? I have three children, the oldest is 20. I am terrified!!

Response from Dr. McGovern

Please refer your questions to the HIV forum.

In the meantime, I would be certain to recheck this antibody test since you are quite certain you are not at risk. There could certainly be a mix up in blood testing....I would also have an HIV RNA test and a CD4 cell count performed. Your husband should have testing as well.

Then you can see if the laboratory test you just received is supported by other information, or the result may simply be incorrect.

It sounds like you are not at risk....but I am sure this waiting period is extremely difficult. Be in touch with your doctor to get more supportive discussion and ask to see an infectious disease expert for further counseling.
