Response from Dr. McGovern
There are hepatitis vaccines against hepatitis A and B.....not Hepatitis C so you need to know more about the hepatitis status of your partner and you also need to know if your hepatitis B vaccine was effective in you. For example, HBV is transmitted commonly through sex. If your partner has chronic HBV, you will want to be sure your surface antibody is high enough to protect you. If your partner has HCV, then the risk of acquiring HCV through sex among monogamous heterosexual couples is low at about 1 to 2 percent per year. There are emerging data that there is greater risk among men who have sex with men however; this risk appears to be associated with traumatic sex and to the presence of ulcerative sexually transmitted infections. | |||||||||
